Simon Calder discovers Dunkirk

One of the joys of travel is to discover places that you had previously overlooked.

Over the years I have travelled via Dover and Dunkirk into Europe on a dozen occasions. But only in the past few months have I had the good sense – and good fortune – to devote time to the town and its surroundings.

The result is a revelation: I feel I have discovered a hidden corner of France, and can't wait to reveal the secret. The magic ABC of art, beaches and cuisine are in ample supply in Dunkirk, along with a rich history and a beautiful hinterland – not to mention plenty of retail opportunities.
